Why Liverpool Coach Benitez Should Bite the Bullet For the Good of Liverpool, Spain and England

Key to Liverpool's woes has in recent weeks has been the injuries to star men Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. Both have been troubled with injuries in the groin area. Gerrard with an adductor injury and Torres with a hernia and while both problems are reportedly 'manageable' straight through a mixture of training and rest, one wonders about the long term viability of this as a clarification to the pairs injury problems.

It is clear to understand Benitez reluctance to sanction operations on two of his key men at such a time. Even if Liverpool had been unbeaten at this stage of the season, Benitez would be hard pressed to do without the pair. The fact that they are struggling and looking devoid of inspiration should both Torres and Gerrard be absent must be a huge worry and while this remains the case, Benitez will wrap his prime assets in cotton wool between games in the hope they can contribute.

Michael Owen stated in his autobiography how he coped with the litany of injuries he suffered. Playing on when hurt and in doing so, over-compensating for his injury by using someone else leg, or changing how he ran for the ball etc. All that happened was that Owen started to pick up other niggling injuries in the muscles, bones and ligaments that were being pushed to the limit over-compensating for the other injuries he had. I feel that for Benitez to do this, with his clubs two many assets, is asking for trouble.

The danger is that Torres, who, like Owen, relies on his explosive pace, is going to pick up other injuries, if he doesn't exacerbate his current injury in the meantime. The same can be said for Gerrard, whose box to box, all action, creative role will push his injury to the limit. I've no idea how long they would be out if injured in this way compared to surgery, but I'd guess it would be longer.

With a World Cup Finals coming up at the end of the season, I think Benitez is being a minuscule selfish to assume that both Gerrard and Torres will complete this season without surgical operation and still be in perfect shape to play for their countries at the World Cup finals. My fear, is that Benitez hopes that both Gerrard and Torres will make it straight through the season, so he can then send them for operations as soon as it is over, thus ruining their chances of taking part in the World Cup finals. No doubt die hard Liverpool fans who have no interest in Spain or England, would prefer this, but for me personally, I'd think Spain and England's chances would be greatly lessened, and the World Cup far less of an event, if whether were to miss out. I'd also venture that neither player would be too impressed at missing out either.

Benitez should bite the bullet and get their injuries sorted properly sooner rather than later. If his squad is not strong enough to cope without the pair, then that is down to one man and one man alone. Perhaps Benitez realises that Liverpool's shambolic failings when they are without their talismanic duo, are in fact a palpable demonstration of his failings as a manager, that of his inability to build a squad that can cope with their absence.

Robbie Fowler - Liverpool Fc Legend

Robbie Fowler was born in Toxteth, Liverpool in 1975 and became one of Liverpool's most players, ironically Fowler was an Everton supporter as a boy, but he joined Liverpool's football academy at the age of eleven.

Fowler excelled as a junior player and signed a pro ageement with Liverpool in 1992, he made his debut nine months later in an Fa Cup game against Bolton.

The following season Fowler started to play usually for the first team, scoring an phenomenal five goals in a League Cup match against Fulham, Fowler was an instant hit with the Liverpool fans and ended his first full season scoring eighteen goals, also scoring the fastest-ever Premiership hat-trick against Arsenal, Robbie Fowler had been transformed from a promising youngster to an Anfield superstar.

The 1994-95 season saw Fowler score thirty goals for Liverpool and win a League Cup winner's medal, he was also awarded the Pfa Young Player of the Year award; a feat that was to repeated the following season as he again scored over thirty goals and retained the Young Player of the Year award.

Fowler had an phenomenal goal scoring capability and he yet again broke the thirty goal mark while the 1996-97 season, he was hero worshiped by the Liverpool fans who concept so highly of him they nick-named him 'God'.

A continued spell of injuries saw Fowler lose his regular starting place, with the emergence of Michael Owen, and under owner Gerard Houllier, he failed to gain a regular starting place as a team 'rotation' course was implemented.

Despite being part of the 2001 Liverpool team that won the Worthington Cup,

Fa and Uefa Cup, Fowler was sold to Leeds United, reportedly against his will, for £11million.

Many Liverpool fans were devastated by Fowlers departure, until January 2006, when Liverpool's owner Rafa Benitez re-signed Fowler for a second stint at his beloved Liverpool.

Although there were glimpses of his old magic, Fowler never recaptured the great form he had shown all those years earlier, and a year and a half later he made his final Liverpool appearance against Charlton, before leaving for Cardiff City on a free transfer.

Robbie Fowler made 369 Appearances for Liverpool, scoring 183 goals, he also made one final emotional return to Liverpool when playing for Cardiff City, and for Liverpool fans he will always remain a legend.

Premier League Preview - Manchester United and Liverpool

There have been a whole of transfers which have affected the top four - whether to there advantage or disadvantage. The player who will be misssed most from the Premier League is none other than Cristiano Ronaldo who joined the Spanish club Real Madrid for a article fee. Manchester United will feel the loss of the great player but if Hargreaves, who missed the last season, makes himself fit the loss will be minimised to a clear extent. Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping that his new signing Antonio Valencia can fill Ronaldo's boots but those are indeed big boots to fill. Manchester United also lost Carlos Tevez but have signed Michael Owen so it wont influence them much. With the likes of Giggs, Scholes, Vidic, Ferdinand, Carrick, Rooney, Owen, Hargreaves and the rest, Manchester United will once more be in the hunt for the title once more and will be seeing for a hatrick.

The Premier League's runners up Liverpool will be hoping they can do it this time with Ronaldo and Tevez absent from Manchester United but Liverpool themselves have lost one of their key playes. The Spanish giants Real Madrid recently signed Xabi Alanso from the Reds and that would have weakened Rafael Benitez's squad. But Liverpool has a very strong squad and if they gel well, the title could be theirs this season. Gerrard is indeed great and can turn any game on its heels and play makers like Torres, Riera, Macherano, Kuyt, Carragher and the rest will only make the opponents fears rise even more.
